My colleagues and I wrote a summary of this issue some years back.

Kriegl's work is very important in this arena
Kriegl, T., Dairy Grazing Farms Financial Summary: Third Year Report. 2003, Center for Dairy Profitability, University of Wisconsin-Madison: Madison, WI.

Hope this helps

Although a number of excellent links have already been presented, the results obtained will depend on a number of factors:

A.- The type of cattle producing the milk;

B.- The products that will be made from that milk;

C.- The market for the milk and derivatives produced;

D.- The pasture (or natural grasses) that will be planted;

E.- The time of year; and

F.- Production costs.

For example: Holsteins will produce more but lower quality milk - so whether the particular market niche demands quality or price is important;

Last I knew, many of my dairy cattlemen friends used African Grasses for forage - but whether that is appropriate will depend on your climate;

When the grasses go to seed, the milk will be richer, which is particularly important for cheese.

Other factors:  What will the grazing density be, how long will be the cattle grazing on each parcel and how many parcels are available per rotation?

Will the calves be drinking part of the milk?

If so, the market for the calves - both heifers and bulls (or will the heifers be kept to expand the herd) must be considered also.

Hi folks - as usual, forum readers are the best!

 Have had several personal emails and some posted to Sanet - all pointing me to CIAS' Dairy Program.  Here's the link: http://www.cias.wisc.edu/category/crops-and-livestock/dairy/

Larry Tranel at Iowa State has a great page on dairying with a lot of links to alternative production systems too.  He also links to the CIAS program.

Finally, I was directed specifically to Jason Karszes' work at the Cornell University's  Pro-Dairy page http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/prodairy/resources/fbmpubs.html- you can find the links about halfway down the first set of links.

I've have what I need to move forward with my work.

Thanks again for the swift and helpful replies!

Best,

Laura

The Northeast Dairy Farm Business Summary at Cornell (Dyson) has a separate booklet for grass-based dairy. The Center for Dairy Profitability (I think that's the name) at UW-Madison also has information.

Hi folks,

Anybody know of a good source to estimate the costs of producing cow milk on grass, or primarily grass?  A recent enterprise budget would be exactly what I'm looking for!

Thanks,

Laura
